There are so many things to consider before piloting a drone. First is how to maneuver it and what causes the changes in its speed and direction. In learning how to control your drone, you also have to understand how it stays airborne.
MECHANISMS OF FLYING
How it stays flying involves the same principle as that of an airplane and helicopter. The drone must have a lift- the force that pushes heavier-than-air air objects up. This is created by balancing the air pressure above and below an aircraft.
For airplanes, the lift is created by moving air above and below its wings. This happens as the planes pass the air in horizontal movement. The larger the aircraft gets, the longer the runway should be in order for it to gain the speed needed to create a lift that will push the aircraft into the air.
Once it’s in the air, it needs to maintain the right momentum in order to produce the right amount of air up and below its wings. The plane only moves in the directed pointed by its noise.
DIRECTIONS & ROTORS
In helicopters, the direction can be changed by controlling the pitch of the blades. It is also known as changing the “attacks” of the propellers. Multi-rotor helicopters have more than one propeller but typically, a helicopter only has one propeller.
Today most drones have multi-rotors, three to eight main propellers. Drones stay airborne by varying the speeds of each propeller. To go to another direction, the “attack” of the propellers needs to be changed by the remote. The change in attack can be done by slowing some of the rotors. This will cause a change in the angle of the craft and will cause enough lift to make it move.
HOW TO FLY A DRONE
Now that you know about how drone flies, it’s time for you to learn how to actually make it fly. The manual that came with it should tell you exactly how to do it. If you need flying demo, you can find instructional videos on YouTube. Alternatively, you can go to the manufacturer’s website and check if they posted a video on how to control the drone.
Before you try to make it fly, check first if the camera is updated. Look into the message board on its website for updates. Make sure the updates are bug-free. Do not update the firmware if it looks like the link is a bug or unless the update is really needed to fly your drone. After the update, do a test flight to make sure it works.
